1-21 1890 Martin $6495.00
Description
The Martin Style 1-21 has its origins in the 1850s and was a popular model throughout rest of the 19th century. There is a penciled date underside the top as was the manufacturing custom that reads 4/90 as the month and year of it’s making.
In 1867, the stamp on the center strip inside the body changed to ‘C.F. Martin & Co., New York’. This stamp can be found on the center strip and neck block inside this guitar, which means it is a post-1867 guitar. In addition, it has a rosewood binding and herringbone rosette around the sound hole.
Professionally repaired and cleated cracks can be found on the Adirondack spruce top, but no other cracks are on the rest of the guitar. The back and sides are exquisite straight grain Brazilian rosewood on this 133 year old beauty. The tuners are original (knobs are bone), nut (ivory-original), bridge, and bridge plate are original. Set up – about 1/8″+ on the saddle. At some point, a trapeze bridge was removed from the guitar, hence the three small holes on the bottom..
This is a real historic guitar that also was the model that Madame De Goni played exclusively in the 19th century. This model was called the “De Goni Guitar” because of her extraordinary ability to astound audiences with her playing. There are no mysteries about the date on this one as it is marked as was the custom at the time 4/90 (built in April 1890).
Comes in the original coffin case with the Martin 1-21 tag on the case lid. Very loud guitar – has D’Addario HT classic strings but can take Thomastik AC110 steels at 94lbs of tension.
